故事背景设定在一场核战争之后的地下冷藏系统中，末日废土时代，已经没有可供呼吸的新鲜空气，人类大量灭绝，剩余的极少数人类精英通过方舟计划冬眠在地下的庇护所内。两位工程师Bauer（诺曼·瑞杜斯 饰）和Cartwright（杰曼·翰苏 饰）在此负责起了庇护所的日常维修和危险检测工作，以及小心照顾着在低温下进入睡眠状态的人们，这些人将会重新建设这个社会。但一切并不是想象中的那么顺利，Bauer和Cartwright一边管理庇护所日常事务，还要在精神世界中同自己搏斗。
